VAN ZEE

Eathel LaNelle Van Zee was born November 26, 1909 in Whitebreast Township, Lucas County, Iowa, one of 12 children of Robert Baird and Elsie Josephine Molesworth Bingaman.

Following high school she spent several years teaching in rural area schools before marrying Lester Gerrit Van Zee in Creston on Jun 10, 1933. They lived in Chariton during their 59 years of marriage. To this union two children were born, Robert Lester Van Zee of Cheney, Wash., and Margaret Jo (Dennis) Foderberg of Shoreview, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Alfred B. Bingaman of Bakersfield, Calif., twin brothers, Mark D. Bingaman of Washington, D.C. and Paul M. Bingaman of Fort Madison; sisters, Mrs. Lois Channell of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. May L. Sanders of Ventura, Calif., Mrs. Dorothy J. Lovely of Atlanta, Ga. and Mrs. E. Marie Burgett of Chariton.

She is survived by her husband, Lester; two children, Robert and wife Veda, Margaret Jo and husband Dennis; six grandchildren, Mark Allen Van Zee, Douglas Leon Foderberg, Matthew Wayne Van Zee, Debra LaNelle Foderberg, Eric Sean Van Zee, Michael Wesley Van Zee; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley Nyx Van Zee and Paige Nichole Foderberg.

Eathel was active in the First Presbyterian Church all her married life. She was also active in the Rebekah's, Fireman's Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, Red Haw Campers and Hikers, Chariton Women's Club, Girl Scouts of America and R.S.V.P.

Eathel was the first Director of the Chariton High School cafeteria, and at age 65, became the Activity Director of the County Care Facility. Eathel and Lester ran the Homemade Ice Cream Store for years, enjoying the many children and adults they served.

Eathel passed away Monday, March 29, 1993, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. She will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, April 3, at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Sara Palmer officiating. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Serving as bearers were Mark Van Zee, Douglas Foderberg, Matthew Van Zee, Eric Van Zee, Mike Van Zee, all grandsons, and great nephew, Paul M. Brown.
