Mr. Charles E. Gschwender, the retired owner of Charlie's TV in Lakeland, Fla died of lung failure Wednesday 4~30~2003
at Tanden Health Care of Lakeland Fla. He was 85. "He would do anything for anybody," said his daughter, Betty Coy, of Lakeland. "He worked very hard because he wanted his kids to have an education. That was very important to him. Everything was either his TV business or his family."Born in Cincinnati on 15~Sept~1917, he served in the Army during World War II
in the South Pacific. Following the war, Mr. Gschwender attended ITT in Chicago, where he took a correspondence course to obtain the knowledge he would need to operate his television business. After coming to Lakeland from Cincinnati in 1961, Mr. Gschwender opened Charlie's TV Shop, working primarily out of his home, selling and repairing televisions for 30 years. "He was mostly a one~man shop. He did all the work himself, Coy said. "He was very active in Ridge Electronics Sales and Service Association~~he was awarded a lifetime membership in 1991. "Mr. Gschwender enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping and baseball. "When we were growing up, we traveled every summer, and this last year, they went as far as up in Georgia," Coy said. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 4. He was a member of the VFW and the Knights of Pythias. In addition to his daughter, Mr Gschwender,is survived by his wife of 55 years, Freda , daughters Terry McPeters,Polk City Janet Picklesimer, Lakeland Fla, Barbara Couch, Lodi Calif., sons, Robert, Craigsville, W.VA, Charles Gschwender Jr. Lakeland Fla, John Bakersfield, Calif., Donald , Apache Junction, Ariz., sisters Martha Kegley, Vandlia, Ohio, Anna Zimmerman, Lancaster, Ca,. Marguerite Marley, Centerville Ohio;Brothers Victor Lakeland Fla, Richard Everett Wash., Joseph Miamisburg, Ohio, William Haines City, Albert Hamilton Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 13 great~grandchildren; one great~great~grandchild. Visitation will be from 5~7 p.m. Sunday at Lanier Funeral Home, 717 W.Griffin Road, Lakeland Fla. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel.
