Catherine E. "Kay" Peterson, 87, of Rock Island, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, 3030 7th Ave., Rock Island, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church or to Alleman High School.

Kay was born on Aug. 23, 1921, in Prosper, Minn., a daughter of William J. and Alice R. Leahy Van Wychen. She was raised and educated in Faribault, Minn., where she graduated from Bethlehem Academy High School in 1939. She married Clair L. Peterson in Holy Family Church, Watertown, N.Y. on Nov. 5, 1943. He died May 1, 1986.

Kay was employed in the office of Montgomery Ward & Co. stores in several cities, including, Rock Island, Moline and Davenport for 26 years, retiring in 1965. She was also employed in the business office of the Rock Island School District No. 41 from 1965 to 1985.

She was a member of the 5th Armored Division Association Auxiliary and a member of the Franciscan and Trinity Hospital Auxiliaries since 1990; Kay was a volunteer in the gift shop. She was a "Bill Payer" volunteer for Alternatives for Older Adults since 1990 and a volunteer at the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging. She enjoyed traveling, bowling, quilting, sewing and most of all her children and grandchildren.

Kay is survived by a son, Dan C. Peterson, Milan; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Leo Hoogerwerf, Rock Island; grandchildren, Orrin Peterson, Milan, James Hoogerwerf, Rock Island, Ashley Hoogerwerf, Long Beach, Calif., and Elly Hoogerwerf, Rock Island; sister, Clarice Babcock, Moline; brothers, Robert Van Wychen, Rock Island, and Francis Van Wychen, San Antonio, Texas; 32 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clair; infant daughter, Pamela Jean; brothers, Albert and Donald Van Wychen; and sister, Patricia Grass.
