Robert Marlow Cone was born January 8, 1799 in Ivanhoe, Bulloch County, Georgia, the son of Aaron Cone, Sr. and Susannah Hannah Marlow Cone. Through the Cone branch of the family, he was descended from Conn of the Hundred Battles, the first high king of Ireland.

Robert had eleven siblings. A farmer, he married Mary Jackson Hylton Cone on November 22, 1824 in Bulloch County, and they had seven children: William Aaron Cone, James Jackson Cone, Peter F. Cone, Mahitable "Hattie" Cone Edwards McClelland, Mary E. Cone, Sarah Robert Cone Harrison, and Susannah Frances Cone Strickland. He died August 25, 1845 in Ivanhoe at age 46 and is buried near his wife at the Old William Cone-Barber Family Cemetery in Bulloch County.

From JoAnn Hagans Harris: From the will of Robert Cone: “Pages 1-3, July 1, 1845; Probated Sept: Term 1845. Will of ROBERT CONE. names wife MARY CONE; sons, PETER F. CONE (will become 21 yrs. age on 27 Nov. 1853), WILLIAM A. CONE, JAMES CONE, PETER F. CONE, MAHETABLE A. CONE, SUSANNAH F. CONE, MARY E. CONE and one not born. Those younger than PETER F. CONE named as MEHETABLE A.CONE, SUSANNAH F. CONE, AARON CONE and JOSEPH CONE. Wit.: JAMES CONE, JOHN GRIMES, BURRELL RICHARDSON.”
