He was a veteran of the War of 1812, the First Seminole War, and a Major General in the Confederacy in the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Georgia Militia.
The "Story of Bulloch County" reports that "It was in 1850 when Peter Cone entered the arena of Georgia politics. He was a dominant figure in the politics of the state and was returned to the Senate at each successive election, with one exception, until
1852 when he voluntarily withdrew from public affairs. It is said that his sister Kesiah [Cone Sheffield Deloach] managed his political campaigns."
Peter died at age 75 in Bulloch County on January 6, 1866 and is buried at the Old William Cone-Barber Family Cemetery in Bulloch County.
