CARLSBAD--Services for Julian R. Mendez Sr., 79, of McKinley Street, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at San Jose Catholic Church with Father Valentine Jankowski officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at San Jose Catholic Church.

West Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born on Dec. 7, 1918, in El Polvo, Texas, to Guillermo and Simona Valenzuela Mendez. His family moved to Loving when he was a small boy.

Mr. Mendez then moved to Carlsbad and married Teofila Saiz on Oct. 24, 1940. He word for the CCC Camps before enlisting in the Army on June 20, 1944.

He fought in the Pacific Theater earning decorations and citation for the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Philippines Liberation Service Ribbons, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 15, 1946.

Mr. Mendez then returned to Carlsbad and worked for the Carlsbad Municipal School system as a plumber until his retirement in 1980.

He was a member of the San Jose Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Teofila, on Aug. 29, 1986. He married Anna Gloria Robles in 1990.

Mr. Mendez was also preceded in death by brothers Crespin Valenzuela and Jose Angel Mendez; and sisters Lupe Hinojos, Manuela Hernandez, Chita Quiroz and Clara Acosta.

Survivors are his wife, Anna, of the home; sons, Juan "Johnny" Mendez of Lompoc, Calif., Robert Holguin, Henry Mendez, Sammy Mendez and Julian Mendez Jr., all of Carlsbad; step-son, Pete Robles of San Antonio; daughters, Helen Salcido of Hanford, Calif., Betty Mendez of Tucson, Mary Campos and Nellie Mendez, both of Carlsbad; step-daughters, Nancy Serkes of Stanford, Conn. and Diana Valentin of N.J.; sisters, Francisca M. Dallas and Leandra Vela, both of Carlsbad; 31 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
