MRS. MENDEZ
Funeral services are pending at West Funeral Home for Simona Valenzuela Mendez, 83, of 607 W. Alvarado St. She died Wednesday at a local hospital.
Born Oct. 19, 1885 in Ojinaga, Chih., Mexico, Mrs. Mendez came to the United States in 1910. She lived in Pecos, Tex., for a short time prior to coming to Carlsbad.
A housewife, she was married to the late Willie Mendez who died in 1924. She had made her home in Carlsbad since. She was a member of the San Jose Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons, Joe and Julian Mendez and Robert Holguin, all of Carlsbad; five daughters, Manuela Hernandez, Francisca Dallas and Leandra Vela, all of Carlsbad, Clara Acosta of Loving and Anastacia Quiros of Lovington; 58 grandchildren and 140 great-grandchildren.
