Ane "Annie" was the daughter of Mads Jensen Hummelshoj and Johanne Marie Larsdatter. After her father died in Denmark in 1874, her mother married Johannes Christensen in 1878. However, her mother died later that same year. In 1888, Johannes (Ane's stepfather) brought Ane, her sister Maren, and her brother Jens Nocolai to the United States. They arrived on board the S.S. Hekla in New York Harbor on June 1, 1888.

In 1889 Ane was working as a cook and seamstress in a boardinghouse for railroad workers in the Wyoming Territory. It was there that she met Jens "James" Christian Sorensen. On August 31, 1889 they were married in Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory.

After homesteading in Wyoming, they moved to western Nebraska where they lived in a dugout/sod house. Subsequently they moved to the Loup City, NE area and finally settled for several decades in the area around Boelus and Dannebrog, NE. Jens & Ane had 13 children, 10 of whom lived to adulthood.
