Clarence "Woody" was born at the Carr farm on Cobb Creek near Loup City, NE. His parents were Jens Christian Sorensen and Ane "Annie" Madsen Sorensen. While he had simple beginnings in a farming family, his Danish immigrant parents stressed the importance of education. He earned several advanced degrees including a PhD from the University of Chicago.

He traveled around the world and gathered information for approximately one dozen geography text books that were used in the United States. Additionally, several of his books were published in other languages. e.g. Urdu for use in Pakistan.

In 1940 Clarence was a CBS Foreign Correspondent in Mexico City. Later, he was the Dean of the Graduate School at Illinois State University and then President of Augustana College in Rock Island, IL.

Woody was married to Edna Schaus.
