David was reportedly born in a log cabin. His parents were Jens (James) and Ane (Annie) Madsen Sorensen, both of whom immigrated to the U.S. from Denmark during the 1880's. David was the 2nd of 10 children who survived to adulthood. During World War 1 David served in France. In Sept 1924 he married Lola Hansen in Salt Lake City.

David received an LLB degree from the University of Denver in 1925. He founded the Colorado Costume Company and, in 1936, was elected President of the National Costumers Association.
