When he was born the county was actually Grundy as Mercer Co. was not organized until 14 Feb 1845. He married Elizabeth Graham on November 25, 1865, and they became parents of five children: William Logan, Sarah Jane, Edna, Ida Elizabeth, and Rufus. Howard served in the Civil War in Co. H, 5th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry, May 13, !861 to December 8, 1864. He entered the veterans home in Leavenworth, Kansas, on October 6, 1920, and died at the hospital there on December 4, 1920.
