John along with his brother, Howard, joined Company H in Kansas during the Civil War to serve the Union. John enlisted as a Private on 14 November 1861. On 24 March 1863 he deserted to the enemy. Later, on his return home to the area of Modena, Mercer County, Missouri, he certainly was not greeted with a "Welcome Home" by all. He was shot and wounded by a Union sympathizer. His wound did not appear to be life threatening and he left never to be heard from again.

The family has always believed that he probably changed his name since nothing has ever been found in records on him. Regardless of what John did during the Civil War, he was not the only young man to get scared and desert to the other side. Much time has passed now and John deserves a place with his family in his childhood community regardless of what he did or where may have gone.
