He married Sarah Catherine Thogmartin about 1873/4 in Mercer Co.,M0., daughter of Robert Thogmartin and Mary Petree Thogmartin. They were parents of seven known children: Roberthia, Carrie Isabelle, Emma Rose (twin), Edgar or Edward (twin), Lula Dell, Robert Martin, and Leonard Harrison. It is believed all the children were born in Mercer Co.

In 1880 the family of four children is living in Putnam, Co., Medicine Twp., Missouri. David is employed as a Mail Contractor. Whither he also farmed in Putnam Co. it is not known. Before 1885 the family is back in Mercer Co. where David is farming in Madison Twp.

On some date a large picture was taken in front of the "D. H. ETHERTON LIVERY STABLE" in Mill Grove, Mercer Co., Washington Twp. east of Modena. Those in the picture are David's sons, Bob, Ed and Leonard with several grandsons as well as David and others with horses and buggies. Although it was not stated in census records of 1900 or 1910 that David owned a Livery Stable, it is believed that he possibly owned it as early as 1898 and maybe to his death in 1912. His granddaughter, Carrie May Ellsworth McQuerry had a copy of this picture.

David died in rural Washington Township of Chronic Bright's Disease (now called Chronic Nephritis and is a disease of the kidneys).
