BIOGRAPHY
Phaene and Orva Hibbs moved to Chariton in March, 1941, where he served as county agent (extension director) until 1947. This included work with the Lucas County Farm Bureau, 4-H clubs, livestock organizations and other rural and city organizations. In 1947, he, along with his brother, Gerold Frederick Hibbs, incorporated Hibbs Livestock Service. They bought and sold livestock throughout the Midwest until 1972. During this time he also served as Des Moines Register and Tribune Newspaper's Chariton Agency manager from 1952-1959.
Phaene was affiliated with the Iowa State Bicentennial Commission as their field man organizing counties and towns throughout the state in their bicentennial activities from 1972-1976.
He was born May 7, 1912 to Della Gottfried and Dr. Thomas G. Hibbs, a dentist at Fonda, Iowa. They were of German and English descent. He graduated from Ames High School in 1938 and from Iowa State College in agricultural education. He taught school in Egeland, North Dakota, Anthon, Iowa, and Osceola, Iowa, before moving to Chariton. He also conducted night school classes in Lacona, Iowa.
Orva Doris Fjelland was born September 20, 1915 to Andrew and Bertha Fjelland in Story County, Iowa. They were both of Norwegian descent. She was raised on a farm and graduated from Huxley High School. She married Phaene in 1935. She enjoyed bridge, golf, sewing and was active in Chariton Book Club, Chariton Women's Club, and they were both long time members of the Presbyterian Church in Chariton.
They had four children: Duane R., born in 1936 in Anthon, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State College in 1958 and married Lenore Torode. He lives in Portage, Indiana. Barbara J., born 1937 in Osceola, Iowa and married to William L. Shelton. They live in Chariton, Iowa. Larry M., born 1943 and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1965. He married Sue Gurlach. They live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Thomas A., born 1946 and attended Iowa State College. He married Annalise Flannagan and they reside in Chicago, Illinois.
Orva died in 1959 and Phaene in 1978.
