GERALD F. HIBBS
Gerald Frederick Hibbs, 69, of Chariton, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 1994, at the Lucas County Health Center of complications due to lung cancer. Fred was born Aug. 17, 1924 to Thomas George and Delphia Avis Gottfried Hibbs in Austin, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Naomi Ward, brothers, Phaene Gottfried, James George and Herbert Arthur and by a grandson, James Chad Dakan.
His surviving sister, Dorothea Katherine Lowman, resides in Ames.
Fred served in the Navy during World War II, 1942-1946. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1947. After graduation, he and his brother, Phaene opened Hibbs Livestock Company. In 1968, he began 19 years of service at the Hy-Vee warehouse, retiring on Sept. 30, 1987.
His retirement allowed him more time to pursue his favorite hobbies: traveling with family and friends, boating and fishing as he was a champion fisherman.
He was an active member of the First Lutheran Church for 43 years, participating on the board, as an usher, in groups and organizing the men's breakfasts. Fred was a longtime resident of the Chariton area, where he had many friends.
Fred married Miriam Louise Westling on Feb. 14, 1951, at the First Lutheran Church of Chariton. They have four children, Carol Sue, Joel Frederick, Katherine Ann and Jana Marie. Carol and E. Charles Dakan of Ames have two children: Cristy and Cody; Joel and Lorraine Dee Hibbs of Chariton have three children: Jeffery, Braden and Adam. Katherine and Robert Oppelt of Mooresville, Ind. have two children: Alexandra and Jacqueline. Jana and Geoffery Holst reside in Houston, Texas.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m., at the First Lutheran Church in Chariton. The service was conducted by the Rev. Lou Hoger, with music by Gayla Tighe and Mrs. Dave Kuball. Bearers were Max Probasco, Jim Probasco, Bill Cross, Paul Hoskins, John Harman and Bob Nielsen. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery preceding the services at the church.
