EVLYN AMY HENSLEY

Evlyn Amy Hensley, the daughter of Nathaniel Douglas and Elva Crane Hamlin, was born on the Hamlin home farm in Exira township, Audubon county Iowa, and died at the Friendship Home in Audubon, Iowa at the age of 99 years, 10 months, and 9 days.

She was baptized at the Exira Christian church. Evlyn attended rural Audubon county schools, then graduated from the Exira High school with the Class of 1916. She then spent many years following the coal mining camps with her brothers, Roy, Douglas, Robert, and Cecil, providing them with home cooked meals during their busy days.

On June 23, 1927, she was united in marriage to Robert James Miller in Guthrie Center, Iowa They lived in Coal City, IL. for several years, then moved to Des Moines, Iowa. While living in Des Moines, Evlyn was employed as a clerk at Katz Drug Store for many years. Robert died October 29, 1955. Evlyn lived in Des Moines for several more years and cared for unwed mothers in her home. She then moved to Braddyville, Iowa to help care for her brother, Vernon.

On December 23, 1969, she married Carl H. Hensley. They lived in Braddyville, Iowa until 1972 when her brother Vernon died, then moved to Exira. Carl died at the Exira Care Center on February 15, 1985. Evlyn maintained her home until she became a resident of the Friendship Home in Audubon in October of 1996. She was a member of the Exira Christian church and the Exira Garden Club.

Preceding her in death in addition to her husbands, were her parents; her brothers and sisters; an infant sister, Roy Burton Hamlin, Nathaniel Vernon Hamlin, Alta Maude Kreamer, Claire McAninch, Edith Audrey Newland, Robert Harold Hamlin, Ida Mae Delphine Carter, Douglas Arnold Hamlin and Cecil Lee Hamlin.
