Lucian, born in Galesburg, Illinois, a few miles from Abraham Lincoln's 5th debate with Stephen Douglas, was the 7th of 14 children. In 1868, following the Civil War, the family moved to Livingston County, Missouri. Following the death of his father in 1873, Lucian and many siblings dispersed across the country. Lucian joined his next older brother, William, in California before moving on to the Northwest in 1879. By 1880 he had teamed with future father-in-law, John Glazebrook, in Idaho to provide railroad ties for the Northern Pacific Railway. In 1884, Lucian married John's daughter, Ferba Ann, while living in Lincoln County, Washington. Eight years later, Lucian moved his family to Yakima where he purchased land and became a successful fruit rancher. After Lucian's death, his son, Harry, continued the ranching operations.
