Born on September 1, 1930 at Medley, WV, he was a son of the late Isaiah "Pete" and Mary Frances (Howard) Bruce. He also was preceded in death by his wife Flora E. (McDonald) Bruce on June 13, 1991; a great-grandson, Daethaniel Bruce; three brothers, Virgil, Henry and Ashton Bruce and a sister, Evelyn Thomas.
Mr. Bruce was retired with 32 years of service from the Westvaco Luke Mill as a machinist. He was a 1950 graduate of Howard High School in Piedmont, WV and was a member of Potomac Lodge # 41, F. & A.M., where he served as Past Master, Washington-Smith Post # 152, American Legion and Nancy Hanks Post # 3518, VFW, all of Keyser. Mr. Bruce was well known in the community for his willingness to help people in need and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are two sons, David V. Bruce and wife Donna of Martinsburg, WV and John E. Bruce and wife Lisa, of Detroit, Michigan; three daughters, Kathy Bruce-Jenkins of Keyser, Terry Bruce of Upper Marlboro, MD and Debra D'Attoma and husband Vito of Indiana; four brothers, Marvin Bruce and wife Cheryl of Mitchellville, MD, Ernest Bruce and wife Sylvia of Ohio, James Bruce of Keyser and Thomas Bruce of Suitland, MD; two sisters, Rosa Hollingsworth and Frances Mabin and husband Raymond, all of Keyser; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, George Thomas; sisters-in-law, Rochelle Stewart and husband James and Darlene Peaks and husband Elmer as well as a number of nieces, nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
Friends were received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services were conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. William Linhart, Rev. Harry Coleman and Rev. David Coleman officiating.
Interment was in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
