Mr. Joseph E. Fairfield, 87, of Thorntown, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Hickory Creek at Lebanon in Lebanon.

Mr. Fairfield was born April 26, 1923, in Illinois, to the now late Joseph and Goldie Mae (Toney) Fairfield.

He married Juanita B. Eskridge on April 8, 1969. She died Feb. 10, 2007.

Mr. Fairfield was in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the United States Army.

He worked for the New York Central Railroad and Conrail, maintaining the tracks.

Mr. Fairfield was a member of the NRA and American Hunters Association.

Survivors include grandsons, Larry Eugene Fairfield of Thorntown, Samuel Joseph Fairfield and Cody Fairfield, both of Crawfordsville, and William Eugene Frietzsche of Lebanon; stepchildren, John Washburn of Indianapolis, James Washburn and Tom Fields, both of Lebanon, LaDonna Doran of Kirksville, Mo., Margaret Morton of Shreveport, La., Carlena Williams, Elsie Fairfield and Lois Cole, all of Thorntown, Rita Batten of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Linda Frietzsche of Avon; stepgrandchildren, Dorothy Sherrill and Julie Abraham, both of Lebanon, Ellie Rutherford of Thorntown, Beverly McKinney of Lebanon, Robert Morton of Clayton, Donny Doran of Florida, John Doran of Kirksville, Paul Doran of West Virginia, Jim Doran of Key West, Fla., Phillip Washburn and Randy Washburn, both of Indianapolis, James Washburn Jr. of Baltimore Md., Aaron Washburn of New Ross, Tammie Parks of Virginia, Adam Washburn of Lebanon, Crystal Washburn of Waynesville, Mo., Jody Brown of Lebanon, Martha Fairfield of Frankfort, Angie Morton, Jack Cole and Steve Cole Jr., all of Lebanon, Joe Fields of Indianapolis, Tom Fields Jr. and Tracy Burns, both of Lebanon, Michael Decker, Zachary Decker and Johnathon Decker, all of Thorntown, Joseph Cox, Nathan Cox and Amanda Morrow, all of Ohio, and Lori Caswell of Kankakee, Ill.; brother, Clancy Fairfield of Jamestown; and sisters, Lattie Cole of Lafayette and Dorothy Urnest Fairfield of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Floyd, Erie, Jack and Jessie; sisters, Mable and Clara; and one son, Larry.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 8, at Russell & Hitch Funeral Home, 116 W. Plum, in Thorntown. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the funeral home in Thorntown. Burial will take place at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
