Allen Grey Bell, youngest son of son of William Montgomery Bell and Margaret Nason Milling, was born in Starkville, Mississippi on the 24th of July 1854. His parents had emigrated from the Fairfield District of South Carolina in the late 1830's and help start this community. Just shy of Allen's 2nd birthday, his mother died. Allen and his brother, Richard, went to live with their father's sister and her husband, Rev. William & Peggy Gray, in Ripley, Mississippi. The Gray's had no children and raised Allen & his brother, as their own.

On November 12th 1879, Allen married a childhood friend, Margaret Minerva Storey, the eldest daughter of Francis Porter Storey and the former Manerva Jane Fryar. Allen and Margaret would have nine children:

Sallie Margaret (1882 – 1965)
William Francis (1885 – 1938)
Dora Pearl (1888 – 1976)
Howard Graham "Gray" (1889 – 1922)
Dudley Joseph (1892 – 1967)
Ora Minerva (1895 – 1934)
Robert Lee (1896 – 1915)
