Richard Thomas Bell, son of William Montgomery Bell and Margaret Nason Milling, was born near Starkville, Mississippi on the 25th of March 1853. Known as Dick by his family, he was the sixth of seven children. His parents were part of a group of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, who had emigrated to this area from South Carolina and started the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Starkville.

Sadly after Richard's third birthday his mother died. So, he and his young brother, Allen, were sent to his father's sister's home in Ripley. Aunt Peggy and her husband, Rev. William Gray. The Gray's had no children of their own, so they raise Richard and Allen as their own. Around 1861, Richard and Allen were joined in Ripley be another cousin, Charles age 10 - son of James R. Bell. The three "Bell boys" were like brothers and formed a lasting friendship.

Around 1878, Richard and Charles moved to the area around Brown, Texas; where Charles later became Sheriff. Richard moved back to his father's home in Starkville; where he met and married Eveline "Evie" Steadman on October 22, 1885.

Richard and Evie would make their home in Starkville and raise their three children:
William Gray (1887-1959)
Joseph Allen (1888-1969)
Richard Thomas, Jr. (1892-1942)

Evie Bell died in 1893 and Richard later married Mary "Donnie" McManus on December 4th 1906. They would have five children:
Margaret Elizabeth (1907-1976)
Mack Eckford (1911-1970)
Charles Edward (1912-1913)
Everett E. (1916-1980)
Raymond Lamar (1921-1995)

Richard Thomas Bell departed this life on August 25th, 1935 at the age of 82 years and 5 months. He was laid to rest in the Bell Family Plot near his first wife, Evie and son, Charles.
