Mary was a daughter of Rev. Dr. Samuel W. and Leonora Maria Staughton Lynd. She married Jacob Burnet, a Court of Common Appeals judge, in 1845 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mary and Jacob became the parents of five children: Charles, Caroline, Albert, Eveline, and Gertrude.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, her daughter Gertrude, and her son, Albert. She died at the age of 91 years in Cincinnati of age-related issues. She was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery. Mary was survived by her son Charles, and by her daughters, Caroline Burnet Wilson (Frank), and Eveline.

In our family tree, Mary is my husband's maternal Great(2)Grand-Aunt. Recently, I discovered Mary's signature inside an inner page of a very old copy of Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol." The book had been in our family for many years and I always display it during the holidays but this year, I actually know at least one of the book's former owners. The signature is very faded but readable.
