James A. Dean (March 27, 1801 - February 5, 1880): Second son of Samuel F. Dean and Martha Kemp. He was born in Addison Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He married Julia Ann Leonard in about 1828 the daughter of Constant Mahlon Leonard and Mary Ann Thorpe of New Jersey. Julia Ann was born August 18, 1802, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. James and Julia Ann Dean were blessed with five children:

1. Sarah A. (October 14, 1828 - November 15, 1917) m. William McLaughlin
2. Mary Ellen (October 29, 1830 - February 19, 1920) m. Joseph Upp
3. Zephaniah (1835-before 1860)
4. James (1848-before 1860)
5. Silas Albert (June 2, 1849 – March 5, 1930) m. Mary Ann Van Dyke

James and his wife moved to Ohio after the birth of their daughter Mary Ellen. James Dean died in Fairfield County, Ohio on February 5, 1880, and his wife followed eleven years later in Berne Township, Fairfield, Ohio on January 29, 1891. Both are buried in Saint Mathews Cemetery, Lancaster, Pleasant Township, Fairfield County, Ohio.
