Fern Marie (Altis) Wilson, 97, daughter of Addison and Elsie (Sigman) Altis, was born Nov. 3, 1912, near Solo, Mo. She passed away Feb. 20, 2010, at the Houston House Nursing Home in Houston, Mo. Fern was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Arvil, Lloyd, Ray and Ernest Altis; three sisters, Esther Lilly, Blanche Mueller and Beulah Thieman; and three husbands, Dean Doss, Jack Fogg and Bland Wilson.
She is survived by her son, David Doss and wife, Carol, of Houston, Mo.; two grandsons, Brent Doss and wife, Janet, and Michael Doss and wife, Janet, all of Springfield, Mo.; a graddaughter, Deana Morgan and husband, Willy, of Kirbyville, Mo.; six great-grandchildren, Tyler Doss of Houston, Mo., Connor, Mallory and Lilly Doss of Springfield, Mo., and Maddi and Cooper Morgan of Kirbyville, Mo.; and also several nieces and nephews. Fern grew up near Solo, Mo., on the family farm near Hog Creek. She loved talking about working in the bottom fields with her siblings and favorite friends, the Blankenship family. The Altis family was very active in the New Hope Baptist Church of Solo, Mo., where her father was a deacon, and where Fern made a profession of faith and was baptized. After eight years of school at Solo, the family moved to Houston, where Fern graduated with the Houston High School class of 1931. She then attended college in the summer while teaching in rural schools around Texas County. In 1966, she received her Bachelor of Science Degeree from Drury College. In 1942 she was employed by the U.S. Selective Service System as clerk of Texas County Draft Board, where she was employed for 31 years. After retiring, Fern enjoyed many years of traveling, fishing and socializing with friends. She will be remembered in the hearts of her family and friends. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Houston, Mo., with Dr. Howell Burkhead officiating. Pallbearers were: Mike Doss, Brent Doss, Willy Morgan, Tyler Doss, Connor Doss and Paul Fockler. Burial was in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
