Dorathea Nitzel was married in Germany on January 11, 1868 to Frederick Wilhelm Braasch. Fritz and Dora immigrated to the U.S. in the spring of 1870 when their first child was six weeks old. They first settled in Waterloo, Iowa. In 1871 they homesteaded a place on Cub Creek...four miles north and one mile east of Jansen, NE. A log cabin was constructed there that same year. It had a lean-to added later to accommodate their ten children. Siding was later added to it. The cabin (house with siding) was lived in until the 1940s. All of their ten children (excluding Louisa) were born in the Braasch Log Cabin, including several grandchildren and other relatives. All of their ten children had dark hair and brown eyes.

Fritz was one of the founders of the St. Paul United Church of Christ (Cub Creek Church) located 1/2 mile west of his farm. Dorathea is buried in the church cemetery located on the church grounds.
