"... Chief of Police, Robert K. Hannahs, aged forty-one years, of Richfield Springs was instantly killed at about 12:30 o'clock Thursday morning of last week while attempting to stop a speeding west-bound transport milk truck which came tearing down Main street in that village at an allegedly high rate of speed. Chief Hannahs was struck near the corner of Main and Center streets. The body was carried about 100 feet, before being deposited in front of the John Matthews gasoline station on the south side of the highway. The truck then sideswiped a telephone pole moving it several inches and then proceeded on its way. Coroner Harrie V. Frink of Richfield Springs was immediately called and ordered the badly mangled body removed to the McGrath Funeral parlors in that village. Trooper Matthew V. Haskins of the Cooperstown outpost of State Police also hurried to the scene to conduct an investigation ... Chief Hannahs was born in Richfield Springs on March 22nd, 1898, the son of James Newell and Mabel Black Hannahs. He had lived in Richfield Springs practically all his life and had been chief of police for the past eight or nine years. On November 11th, 1917, he married Miss Hortense Owen of Richfield Springs, who died in 1921. They had two children, Ann and Dorothy. In 1925 Mr. Hannahs married Miss Hazel Sternburg of Cherry Valley, who survives, together with the above mentioned children and also three other children, Beverley, Robert K., Jr. and Donald Newell; a brother, Stanley of Richfield Springs; a half-brother, James, of Walton; a half-sister, Mrs. Grace Dexter of Binghamton; and an uncle, J. Gordon Black of Rochester ..." ["The Freeman's Journal" (Cooperstown, NY), May 4, 1938, Page 10]
