Mr. Walter G. Hannahs, 75, of Niskayuna, the father of a Johnstown resident, died Sunday at home.

He was born on Nov. 16, 1925 in Milton, Pa., the son of James Newell and Anna Mary Gyltz Hannahs. Mr. Hannahs was a 1944 graduate of Potsdam High School. He graduated cum laude from St. Lawrence University with a bachelor's degree in history in 1949. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha. He earned a master's degree in history from the University of Rochester.

He taught at Herkimer High School and Johnstown High School earlier in his career. He was an admissions officer and financial aid officer at the University of Rochester from 1956 to 1966. He held a variety of positions with the New York State Department of Education, including associate of higher education; assistant coordinator, Office of State Aid to Non-Public Colleges; and director of student financial aid, Regents Examination and Scholarship Center from 1966 to 1975.

He served in the Army during World War II in the combat infantry in Europe and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was director of financial policy development for the state Higher Education Service Corporation.

He was an associate in higher education for the Bureau of Post-secondary Planning and a consultant to the U.S. Office of Education from 1976 until he retired in 1991.

Mr. Hannahs was a member of the guidance subcommittee of the College Scholarship Service Assembly; a member of the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association, and a past president of the National Association of State Scholarship Programs.

He was active in University of Rochester alumni activities, including membership in the President's Leadership Council and chairmanship of the Regional Alumni Association and Scholarship Committee.

He was a volunteer for the Boy Scouts in Niskayuna and the Niskayuna Little League; a member of the Schenectady Inner City Ministry; and past president of Colonial Little Theatre, Johnstown.

He also served as a vestryman and church warden.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, the former Mary Wilson; one son, James N. Hannahs of Johnstown; two daughters, Diane J. Hannahs of Schenectady and Carol A. Byrne of North Kingston, R.I.; one sister, Laura Hartung of The Villages, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Burial will take place in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
