Retired Boss of ABC Stores Kills Himself

Joe Frank Meriwether, 56, retired Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board employee, shot himself fatally at his home yesterday, according to a coroner's report.

Meriwether was a brother of Gordon K. Meriwether, insurance executive here.

A resident of the city for about 40 years, Joe Meriwether had been retired from the ABC board since March of this year. At the time of his retirement, he was supervisor of stores. He had been connected with the ABC Board since its beginning.

Coroner M. B. Kirkpatrick said Meriwether apparently placed a .38 caliber automatic pistol behind his right ear and pulled the trigger at approximately 9:30 a.m. in a bedroom of his home at 20 N. Lewis St. He was found by police on the floor of his bedroom with the pistol between his feet. Officers were summoned after Mrs. A. H. Estes, 2500 Cherry St., a sister-in-law of the dead man, said she heard a shot from the bedroom as she prepared lunch. She said she had served Meriwether his breakfast a few minutes prior to the shooting.

Meriwether was taken to St. Margaret's Hospital where he died at 11:05 a.m.

The retired state employee had been ill for some time, according to his brother. Dr. Kirkpatrick said Meriwether also was evidently "deeply depressed."

Surviving in addition to his brother, Gordon, are the widow, Mrs. Vera Cain Meriwether; two other brothers, G. A. Meriwether and James H. Meriwether, both of Mobile; three sisters, Mrs. A. A. Poindexter and Mrs. Marshall S. Green, both of Montgomery; and Mrs. A. A. Williams of Ft. Deposit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday from Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Alfred E. Bixler and Dr. Henry L. Lyon Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
