Marie Cornwell Sheets, 92, of Burke's Garden, Va., died Saturday, December 25, 2010, at her home. Born on September 21, 1918, in Thompson Valley, Va., she was a daughter of the late James Thomas and Myrtle Williams Cornwell. Mrs. Sheets attended the Burkes Garden United Methodist Church and relied on the Lord for her strength and stamina. She was a homemaker following many years of employment with General Instrument Corporation of North Tazewell, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe F. Sheets; three sons, Eugene Sheets, Ray Sheets, and Eddie Sheets; one granddaughter, Sherry Brown; six brothers, Rufus Cornwell, Robert Cornwell, William Cornwell, Frazier Cornwell, Ralph Cornwell, and Joe Cornwell; and one sister, Mae Rose. Survivors include three sons, Joseph "Babe" Sheets, of Burkes Garden, Va., Harry Sheets and wife, Linda, of Bluefield, Va., and Bev Sheets and wife, Peggy, of Bristol, Va.; two daughters, Margaret Hancock and husband, Bobby, of Pulaski, Va., and Myrtle Leffel, of Tazewell, Va.; one brother, John Cornwell; three sisters, Arabelle Rose, Margaret Phillips, and Faye Rose; nine precious grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; three special daughters-in-law, Bertie Sheets, Cookie Sheets, and Dee Smith; and her very special friend and physician who brightened her life, Dr. Phillip Peterson. Funeral Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Rev. Rodney Lawson and the Rev. Roy Lee Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be J.C. McCann, Doug Melvin, Jody Claytor, Garland Hancock, David Asbury, and Eddie Rhudy. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Thursday, December 30, 2010. The family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Burkes Garden United Methodist Church, c/o Kathy Claytor, Treasurer, 2554 Banks Ridge Road, Tazewell, Va. 24651.
