James Frazier Cornwell, Sr., 83, of Burkes Garden, went to be with his Lord and Savior and with his loving wife, Esther Marie McMeans Cornwell, and a dear friend, Henry Vanhoozier, June 14 after a long illness.

Born March 13, 1924 in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late James Thomas Cornwell and Myrtle Adeline Williams Cornwell.

He was a devoted member of the Riverside Community Church in North Tazewell. He spent most of his life as a farmer on Oak Grove farm in Burkes Garden working for Bob Moss.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Marie McMeans Cornwell; five brothers, Robert, Rufus, Ralph, Joe and Bill Cornwell; and one great grandson, James David Asbury.

Survivors: son, James F. Cornwell, Jr. of Baptist Valley; brother, John Cornwell and wife, Opal, of Baptist Valley; sisters, Marie Sheets of Burkes Garden, Arebell Rose and husband, Bob, and Faye Rose and husband, Harold, all of Baptist Valley; Mae Rose of Tazewell, Margaret Phillips and husband, Raymond, of North Carolina; grandchildren, Jamie Asbury, Deidre Cornwell, Kristi Cornwell and Amy Cornwell; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends; a special great granddaughter, Cortney Asbury (Corkie); and his buddy, David Asbury.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. June 16 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Robert Buckles and Darryl Caudill officiating.

Burial followed at the Burkes Garden Central Church Cemetery in Burkes Garden.
