HENRY RITTER, VETERAN, DIES
Another Civil War Veteran Answers Last Call at Age of 86 Years
Henry Ritter, aged 86 years, 3 months and 13 days, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel C. Schilling, Belle Avenue, Lewistown Junction, at 6 a.m. today after an illness of six months. He was confined to his bed during the six weeks just preceding his death.
Mr. Ritter served in the Civil War during its entire four years as a member of Company F., 187th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was a member of the Reformed Church at Lewistown.
The wife of Mr. Ritter, whose maiden name was Miss Mary Matilda Knepp, preceded him in death, June 25, 1929.
During his entire life Mr. Ritter was a farmer by occupation in Granville Township, until old age compelled him to abandon is agricultural pursuits. He served as road supervisor of his township and he was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
He leaves the following four sons and seven daughters; John Ritter, Spruce Street, Lewistown; Joseph Ritter, Yeagertown; Charles Ritter, Dry Valley, Derry Township; Clell Barr Ritter, Burnham; Mrs. Harvey H. (Mary) Messemer, Logan Street, Lewistown; Mrs. Samuel C. (Rosa) Schilling, Belle Avenue, Lewistown Junction, with whom the father had his home; Mrs. Clarence (Annie) Wheeler, Walnut Street Extended, Lewistown; Mrs. Robert (Elizabeth) Brannon, Burnham; Mrs. Charles (Sallie) Steele, Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs. Percy (Bertha) Seibert, Saxton; Mrs. John A. (Florence) Beers, 203 Valley Street, Leiwstown.
James and George Ritter of McClure are brothers of the deceased and William Heeter of McClure is a half-brother of the decedent.
The funeral services will be conducted at the late residence of the deceased, the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel C. Schilling, Belle Avenue, Lewistown Junction, on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by the pastor of the deceased Rev. Dr. F. A. Rupley, Trinity Reformed Church. The burial will be made in William Lind Memorial Cemetery beside the wife of the deceased, Mary Matilda Knepp Ritter.
