Robert Paul Fairchild was born on August 31, 1927 in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina. He is the second
son and the second of five children of Archie Bell Fairchild and Bessie Ila Dancy Fairchild. His siblings are:Earl Edwin Fairchild, James Stewart Fairchild, Charlie Frank Fairchild and Virginia Dare Fairchild Brafford.

Paul married Ruth Ailene Ferguson on September 22, 1945 in Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina. They are the parents of one son Robert Franklin "Frank" Fairchild and grandparents to three grandsons Robert Franklin Fairchild II "Bob", Brian Scott Fairchild and Gregory Ross Fairchild.

Paul spent his early years living in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina until his parents moved their little family to High Point, North Carolina seeking work for his father during the Great Depression. His father found work in a hosiery mill and worked there for several years before he moved his family back to the Champion-Mount Pleasant community in Western Wilkes Country where they took up farming, raising chickens and a few head of cattle. Their family lived in the Champion-Mount Pleasant community in the area called Red Top. Paul's parents also ran a small country store on the edge of their property. Paul's grandfather Jessie Abijah Fairchild lived just up the road from his parents farm on the old Fairchild home place. Paul and his brothers helped their parents run the farm until they were adults and left home.

Paul attended school at Mount Pleasant until he was sixteen years old. He left school because in his words "he knew all that there was to know". He worked on his parents farm until he married Ruth Ferguson and decided that he had better get a real job to support his wife.

Paul's first real job, as he called it, was driving a charter bus for Wilkes Transportation. While he worked driving the bus Paul, Ruth and their son Frank lived in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. He worked at this job for about three years and then went to work in the furniture industry. He worked in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina for several years then moved his wife and son to Lenoir, North Carolina to work in a furniture factory there. He worked at Hibriten Industry. While living there his wife Ruth worked in Hiddenite, North Carolina at a textile factory that made Wrangler Jeans. They lived there for three years where Frank went to the second, third and fourth grades at Gamewell Elementary School.

Paul's father, Archie, gave him some land to build a house on so the family moved back to Wilkes County and lived once again in the Mt. Pleasant community. While Paul, his father Archie, his Uncle Theodore Fairchild (Archie's older brother) and other family members built their home, Paul, Ruth and Frank lived in a old log Cabin down next to the Yadkin River. Their little family had to rough it while living in the log cabin because it didn't come with electricity, running water or in door plumbing. They had to use an "Out House" and get their water from a spring.
It took three months to build their new home on Red Top Road. The family couldn't wait to move in.

Paul worked at the American Drew Furniture Factory in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina While his wife Ruth continued to work in Hiddenite, North Carolina carpooling there every day. Paul would get off work, go home and him and Frank would prepare supper for Ruth and have it on the table when she got home. Ruth worked in Hiddenite for several years and then got a job working in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina once more. They continued to live in their little white house, attending Davis Memorial Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, vacations Bible School and sang in the choir. In the fall of 1973 they sold their house and bought a trailer and put it on their property next door. They lived in the trailer on Red Top road until the summer of 1975, When Paul's Uncle Theodore passed away and they bought the old Fairchild Home Place. Because the old house was so small they decided to move their trailer up next to the house and joined them together giving them a nice four bed room home. Paul and Ruth lived there together until Ruth passed away in August of 1983. Paul continued to live there until he passed away in November of 1997.

Paul continued to work at the American Drew Furniture Factory until the summer of 1982, when he retired so he could stay home to take care of his wife Ruth, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He took care of Ruth until she passed away on August 27, 1983. He then went to work at the Mt. Pleasant Rest Home for a short time until a series of heart attacks and other health problems left him disabled and unable to work any longer. He lived to see his son Frank retire from the Navy and move back home to Wilkes county. He suffered a fatal heart attack in November 1997.

Paul is preceded in death my his wife Ruth Ailene Ferguson Fairchild, his parents Archie Bell Fairchild and Bessie Ila Dancy Fairchild, two brothers Earl Edwin and Charlie Frank Fairchild, his sister Virginia Dare Fairchild Brafford; nephew Charles Edwin Fairchild and an Infant Niece.
