James spent his early years living in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina until his parents moved their little family to High Point, North Carolina seeking work for his father during the Great Depression. His father found work in a hosiery mill and worked there for several years before moving his family back to the Champion-Mount Pleasant community in Western Wilkes Country where they took up farming, raising chickens and a few head of cattle. Their family lived in the Champion-Mount Pleasant community in the area called Red Top. James's parents also ran a small country store on the edge of their property. James's grandfather Jessie Abijah Fairchild lived just up the road from his parent's farm on the old Fairchild home place so James grew up running the road between his parent's farm and his grandfathers. James and his brothers helped their parents run the farm until they were adults and left home.
James attended school in the Champion-Mt. Pleasant community and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1948.
On April 8, 1950, at the age of 20, James married Wilma Rose Mikeal in Wilkes County, North Carolina. In February of 1952 James and Wilma suffered the loss of their only daughter when she enter this world as a stillborn.
After high school James worked in the furniture industry for several years until he moved back to the Champion-Mt. Pleasant area of Western Wilkes County with his wife Wilma and started raising chickens. They worked side by side for many years raising thousands for chickens each year until they decided that they had had enough being chicken farmers.
By this time they were the parents of 3 growing sons, Jeffrey, Mark and Anthony. They moved to Taylorsville, North Carolina where they bought a cafe called the "Rainbow Cafe" and they had this cafe for several years. They then sold that cafe and bought a new one called the "Burger Basket". By this time their sons were getting old enough to help in the cafe. James, Wilma and their sons worked together in this cafe until James was old enough to retire then he handed over the reins to his middle son Mark and his wife Kimberly.
James enjoyed his retirement by working around his home and in his yard and garden. But most of all he enjoyed spend time pour out all his love to his grandchildren.
The last few years of his life James suffered from many health issues and spend his last years in a nursing home where he life long sweetheart and companion Wilma attended to him each day until he passed away on September 18, 2009.
James is survived by his wife, Wilma Rose Mikeal Fairchild, 3 Sons, Jeffrey Stuart (Mecia) Fairchild, Mark Alan (Kimberly) Fairchild and Anthony Ryan (Robin) Fairchild. His Grandchildren; Dylan, Evan, Kaley, Kyler, Karly, Macy and Maddox Fairchild. Several Nieces and Nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Archie Bell Fairchild and Bessie Ila Dancy Fairchild and his siblings; Earl Edwin, Robert Paul, Charlie Frank Fairchild and Virginia Dare Fairchild Brafford.
He is buried at Davis Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in the Champion-Mt. Pleasant Community in Western Wilkes County, North Carolina. He is buried next to his Infant Daughter and surrounded by this parents, brothers, sister, Sister-in-law and brother-in-law and his nephew.
