Amelia was the 4th of 8 children born to Henry Schafer and his first wife, Amelia Kaiser. Her mother died before she had turned five years old, and her father remarried very soon thereafter to Minnie Most; Minnie did, in effect, raise her along with Amelia's 5 surviving siblings and the 9 children from her father's second marriage. Minnie died shortly after Amelia married John Nolte.
The children of John and Amelia were:
Milton (died at the age of 8 days in Nov 1913);
Melvin (b. 1915);
Leonard (b. 1916);
Amelia or Emilie (1919-1986; married Edwin Mohling);
Cornell (died at the age of 7 months in 1921);
John L (died at the age of 6 weeks in Mar 1923);
and Emmett (1924-2011).
