William J. Scott, 74, a resident of the Traer community almost continuously for nearly seventy-years, died Saturday morning at his home here after a long illness of cancer. His condition had shown much improvement following an operation about two years ago, but of late he had again failed rapidly. He was the youngest and last of five children of Robert and Ann Scott, and was born at Quincy, Massachusetts, January 12, 1866. When he was about 5 years old the family moved to a farm seven miles south of Traer He was educated in the schools of this community, and on January 5, 1892 was married at Grundy Center to Carrie Engel, who survives. To them were born six children of whom three — Mrs. Blanch Whannell, of Detroit, Michigan; Ralph Scott, of Osage, Iowa; and Mrs. Edna Sparks, of Maxwell—yet are living. A son, Melvin, died here September 8, 1937 and two other children died in infancy.

Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Scott farmed in the Traer community until thirty-seven years ago when they moved to North Dakota. After four years, they returned to Iowa and since the have lived in Traer. Mr. Scott served as Traer city marshal several years and was employed for twelve years as a fireman at the local municipal electric plant until his retirement a few years ago. He was a man of high character. Widely respected in the community. Besides the widow and three children already named, he is survived by nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The Rev. J. J. Snyder, Traer Methodist pastor, was in charge of the funeral service Monday afternoon at the Boettcher Funeral Home. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery. Casket bearers were Theodore Knoop, Clarence Hupfeld, Louis Matthiesen, Clarence Otterman, Will Burns and Charles Davis.
