Mrs. Carrie Scott, 84 of Traer. Widow of William Scott died last Friday morning at the home of her daughter Mrs. Fred Whannel in Traer. Death was caused by complications of advanced age including a heart condition. She had been ill for several months but had been bedfast only the past seven weeks and was cared for by her daughter here. Born Carrie Mae Engle on September 1, 1868 at Reading, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Scott was a daughter of frank and Eliza Engle. The family moved to the Traer vicinity about 70 years ago, while she was a young girl, after spending some time in Whiteside County, Illinois near Sterling. The Engle family settled on a farm near Traer. Where she lived until her marriage on January 5, 1892 at Grundy Center to William J. Scott of Traer.
For a few years, the couple farmed northwest of Traer. Then they moved to northwestern Iowa near Ocheyedan, later to a farm near Leonard, North Dakota where they remained about five years. They returned to Traer about 42 years ago to make their home in town. They were the parents of four sons and two daughters. The daughters, Blanche Whannel of Traer, and Mrs. Edna Sparks of Maxwell; and a son Scott of Osage, survive. Earl LeRoy and Clarence both died in infancy and a son Melvin died as a young man. Here husband died in 1940. She leaves a brother Adam Engle of Sibley, and a sister Mrs. Bert Wilson of Ocheyedan; seven grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.
Most of her life, Mrs. Scott was a member of the Methodist church in Traer, active in church attendance and participating in various church activities until last year, when failing health prevented. But she maintained keen interest in religious services broadcast over the radio. Her staunch faith in the "old time religion" was a comfort and strength up to her last hours. Prayers written by hand were found in her personal Bible, worn from use, and they expressed her Christian philosophy.
The Rev. Paul Somerville in the funeral services Monday afternoon in States Funeral home, eulogized Mrs. Scott for her quiet, unassuming manner, her constant interest in worthwhile matters and her desire to be of help to those who needed encouragement and a helping hand. Mrs. Burdell Staker, Mrs. William Neidick and Mrs. Leiland Whannel sang, accompanied by Mrs. Leroy Whannel at the piano. Mrs. Roy Kern and Mrs. Katherine Wood were in charge of flowers, Paul bearers were Tom Valenta, Mike Meinhart, Darrell Karr, Ralph Crawford, Roy Kern, and Irwin Branson. Burial was in Buckingham cemetery.
