Former Irion Sherriff's Rites Scheduled Today
MERTZON (STNS) – John A. boyd, 83, former sheriff of Irion County, died at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday at Clinic Hospital in San Angelo.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church in Mertzon with Rev. John McMullen, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mertzon Cemetery.
Mr. Boyd was born Oct. 9, 1889 in Nolan County and was married to Rachel H. Reinhardt March 29, 1913 in Anson. She died in 1971. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 699 in Mertzon. He was elected sheriff of Irion County in 1933, serving six terms until 1946. He had been a foreman of the O. H. Triangle Ranch in Irion County before running for office.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin Boyd of Mertzon and Eddie Boyd of San Angelo; three brothers, Jess Boyd of Lubbock, Joe Boyd of Roby, Bill Boyd of Sweetwater and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers for Mr. Boyd will be H. E. Noelke and Loy Tankersley, both of San Angelo, Vern Davis of Big Lake, and J. T. Davis Francis Shelton, C. W. Trainer, Leroy Covey and Boyce Tankersley, all of Mertzon.
