NOLAN COUNTY PIONEER PASSES IN SAN ANGELO

Eli Coffee, 65-year-old former resident of Nolan and probably one of the first white children to be born in Nolan County, died Monday night in a San Angelo hospital. Mr. Coffee died after being critically ill for approximately eight weeks.

He had made his home in San Angelo for the past 39 years. He was engaged in the cattle business in Tom Green County during that period.

Mr. and Mrs. Eli Coffee, Sr. came to Nolan County and settled in Mulberry Canyon community in 1879 from Brown County, where Mrs. Coffee had lived since a small child. Mr. Coffee came to Texas in the early 1870's and settled in Brown County before coming to Nolan County to make his home. He was engaged in the cattle business in Nolan County at the time of Eli, Jr.'s birth in Mulberry Canyon community on September 22, 1881.

Later the Coffee family moved to the vicinity of Lake Sweetwater where the old family cemetery is still located. Lake Sweetwater is located on the old Coffee homestead. Eli Coffee lived on the old family place near the present location of the lake until he moved to San Angelo.

He married Miss Lena Parks in 1903 in San Angelo and came back to Nolan County where he made his home until 1908 at which time he moved to San Angelo.

He is survived by his widow; one son, Bryant of San Angelo; and two small grandchildren, Ellena and Ronnie Eli; six sisters, Mrs. Frances Rasberry, Mrs. Lizzie Rounsaville and Mrs. Nick Williams, all of Sweetwater, Mrs. Marvin Chitwood of Wingate, Mrs. Gerald Witt of Los Angeles and Mrs. Lou Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.; six half-brothers, Charley, George and Bill Boyd, all of Sweetwater, John Boyd of Mertzon, Joe Boyd of Midland, and Jess Boyd of Petersburg.

Funeral services will be held from the ranch home of George Boyd, 14 miles southeast of Sweetwater at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Will Scott, Church of Christ minister of Sweetwater, will conduct the services. Burial will be in the old Coffee Cemetery near Lake Sweetwater, under direction of a San Angelo funeral home.
