David McKell was born June 2nd, 1813 in the Fairfield District, South Carolina. David was the son of William and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bell McKell. After his father's death in 1821, Elizabeth and David's siblings: James, Nancy and Jane along with a number of their Montgomery & Bell relatives moved to Oktibbeha County, Mississippi near Starkville.
On December 24th 1843, David McKell was married to Elizabeth Jane Nason, daughter of James and Margaret [Montgomery] Nason at Associate Reformed Presbyterian in Starkville, Mississippi. They had six children:

William (1845–1876)
Catherine (1847-1868)
Hugh Montgomery (1850-1851)
Margaret "Maggie" {m. Middleton} (1852-1872)
David McKell departed this life on the 25th of June 1855 at the young age of 42 years. He was buried beside his son, Hugh, in Associate Reform Presbyterian cemetery.
