Hugh Montgomery McKell was the son of David and Elizabeth McKell. His paternal grandparents were William McKell and Elizabeth (née Bell) McKell, a charter memeber of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian (A.R.P.) Church, Starkville, MS. His maternal grandparents were James & Margaret (née Montgomery) Nason.

Hugh Montgomery McKell was named for his great grandfather, Hugh Montgomery, a charter member of the Old Brick Ebenezer A.R.P. Church in Jenkinsville, Fairfield Co., South Carolina.
