Final Rites For Wm. Cox Held Sept. 8
Funeral services for William Coyle Cox, 59, a resident of the area for many years, were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Graceville, with Rev. James Devorak officiating. Mr. Cox died on Sept. 5. Interment took place in the Graceville Cemetery.
Mr. Cox was born at Graceville on Sept. 16, 1919, the son of the late William B. and Mary Jane Coyle Cox. He graduated from Graceville High School and earned a BA degree in Economics from St. John's University in 1942. He joined the U.S. Navy and attended Midshipmen School at the University of Notre Dame. He served with the Navy in the Pacific during WW II, and was discharged from active duty in 1945 as a Lieutenant. He was in the inactive Naval Reserve until 1957.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Hammersmith of Minneapolis at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Aug. 29, 1944, and to this union were born three children: Geraldine (Curtis) Piechowski of Madison, William J. (Collette) of Ft. Sheridan, IL, and Michael of Chaska.
After discharge from the service, he was in business in Browns Valley until 1963 at which time the family moved to Graceville. He was in the insurance business until 1965 and then joined CAP where he was Director in West-Central Minnesota with office at Elbow Lake. He then joined Rural Minnesota CEP in Morris as a Center Coordinator with a subsidiary office in Alexandria. He also served as City Clerk for the City of Graceville from shortly after he moved to Graceville until the time of his death.
Mr. Cox was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Knights of Columbus, the Browns Valley Fire Department, and was secretary of the Graceville Cemetery Association.
He is survived by his wife and family; one granddaughter (Jill Piechowski), a sister, Marie (Andrew) Weber of Minneapolis, a brother, James, of Edina, many nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Pallbearers were Vic Hoffman, Wayne Billiet, Wayne O'Connor, Martin Carlson, Tom Tobin, and Robert Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were James Grant, Harry Rixe, Bob Needham, John Cota, Rod Gaffney, Don Seeberger, and Robert Smith.
