Emmitt Pfost Served As Ada Official During World War I
James Emmitt Pfost, 78, Ada county sheriff and state department of law enforcement commissioner, died at his home near Eagle, Monday, Jan. 21, 1946. He was sheriff for 10 years covering the World War l period, and served in the state peace office position for six years. He had been ill for some time.
He was born on Christmas day, 1872, in Butler, Bates, Missouri, to Isaac W. and Margaret V. (Koontz) Pfost and had lived in Idaho 68 years. He married Bessie M. Anderson Aug. 4, 1897 at Meridian, Ida. In addition to his law enforcement activities, he was a rancher and stockman,
During the Boer war in Africa shortly before the turn of the century, Mr. Pfost corralled wild horses in the hills in the Meridian area, had cowboys "break" them and sold them to agents of the British government, who shipped them to Africa for the cavalry.
Mr. Pfost is survived by his wife, Bessie; a daughter, Mrs. Laneita Johnson, Loma Linda, Calif; two sons, Cecil A., Twin Falls and Capt. Ernest Pfost, Boise; seven grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Effie Burns, and a brother, Robert Pfost, both of Boise.
Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 24, at 1:30 p.m. at the McBratney-Fowler Chapel. The Rev. R. J. Winders will officiate and interment will be at Morris Hill Cemetery.
