Mr. Carpenter was was a U.S. Army-Air Force Veteran of World War II, he was Master Sergeant and fought in several battles and campaigns including Luzon, Western Pacific, Air Offensives in Japan, China, India Burma and the South Philipines. He received the APTO Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and a Distinguished Unit Badge. Mr. Carpenter was Mayor of Calvin for 28 years where he was instrumental in developing a town water and sewer system. He received a Masters Degree in Business from Northwestern State University and taught at Huey P. Long Trade school until retirement. He was a member of the Calvin Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for many years. Mr. Carpenter along with his wife Lanell owned and operated Corner Grocery in Calvin.
Mr. Carpenter was the son of the late William Edward Carpenter and the late Mattie Hodge Carpenter. He was also preceded in death by his wife Doris Lanell Wilson, six brothers Frank, Alon, Leon, Calop, Clifford, and W. E. "Sam", and three sisters Ruth, Helen and Ruby.
Mr. Carpenter is survived by two sons Bobby Carpenter and his wife Donna of Vicksburg, MS, and Ronald Carpenter and his wife Lisa of Katy Texas, four grandchildren Brad Carpenter and his wife Kim, Heath Carpenter, Kristin Carpenter, and Nicole Carpenter, one great-grandchild Carys Carpenter, and one sister Erline Martin of Calvin. Mr. Carpenter is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 10, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Calvin with Reverends Gerald Roberts and Lamar Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery near Calvin under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.
Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 p.m until 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday at the church from 2:00 p.m. until time of services.
