Florence A. Wood
Dec. 25, 1915-Feb. 25, 2010
Florence Arlene WOOD, 94, of 1208 Wabash Ave., Rochester, passed away at 8:05 p.m. Thursday at Hickory Creek at Rochester.
She was born in Deedsville on Dec. 25, 1915, the daughter of the late Chester and Hulda (Gilliland) McCalla, and she was one of eleven children. She was married March 17, 1935, in Peru to Howard M. Wood, who preceded her in death in 1983.
Florence was a devoted mother and wife and enjoyed making a wonderful home for her family. She and Howard annually planted a vegetable garden. To keep her mind sharp she enjoyed the challenges of jigsaws, crossword puzzles and solitaire. She looked forward to taking walks daily until she was nearly 82. Chatting with friends at the Community Resource Center or the grocery were means with which Florence kept up with the latest news.
Florence is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Hiatt and husband Ernest, Rochester; two grandchildren, Cheryl Bieler and husband Jerry, Leimonster, Mass., and Gary Hiatt and wife Sara, Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Bieler, Long Island, N.Y., and Justin Bieler, Annapolis, Md.; one great-great-grandson, Owen Bieler, Annapolis, Md.; and three sisters, Marjorie Miller, Patricia Lamb and Barbara Clark, all of Rochester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Hazel Buchannan and Helen Dague; and five brothers, Harold McCalla, Echo McCalla, Everett McCalla, and, in infancy, Richard McCalla and Gerald McCalla.
As requested, private family visitation and services will take place at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Maurice Grindle officiating. Interment will be at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hope Hospice of Fulton County or the Grace United Methodist Church of Rochester. Electronic expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at [email protected].
