Philip Gentzler was born in Warrington township, York, Pennsylvania, July 6, 1841 and died April 12, 1916, being seventy-four years, none months and six days old.

When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in 1861 and served his county for thirty-eight months, having entered as a private. He was discharged a Captain of the company in which he enlisted, Company H of the 87th Penn. Volunteer Infantry.

In 1870 he was married to Rosina Stripe and there was born to them five children. Two of these survive him, Mrs. C. Yorke of Venus and Mrs. R.W. Burr of Bartlett, Nebr.

In 1884 he was married to Julia Ann ( Myers) Scott. To this union seven children were born, Mrs. Julian Whiting of Clitheral, Minn., F.T. Gentzler of Orchard, Mrs. Baron Darr of Creighton, Warren J. Gentzler, who died January 16, 1911, Mrs. Walter Darr of Venus, Gurney and Merle Gentzler of Creighton.

Mr. Gentzler came to Nebraska, shortly after the Civil War, coming to Fremont and living there for several years. From there he moved to Saunders county. In March 1892, he came to live in Knox county. Coming first to the town of Creighton, where he lived for about eighteen months. He, then, moved to a farm several miles west of town.

He was confirmed in the Lutheran church, but for about thirty years has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. At the time of his death his membership was at the Venus Circuit charge. He was a soldier, when his county needed him, but he had not forgotten that soldiership under the banner of Christ brings a reward eternal and "a crown of righteousness that fadeth not away."

The funeral services conducted by Rev. Joseph Stopford were held at the Methodist church and the body laid in its last resting place in the Creighton cemetery.

In 1860, he was a carpenter living with his family in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall, but no record of his hair and eye color was found.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in York on August 27, 1861, and mustered into federal service there on September 19 as a private with Co. H, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to sergeant September 1, 1862, he was detached to duty with the ambulance corps during the winter of 1863 and 1864 while encamped at Brandy Station, Virginia. Due to attrition - there were no officers left in the company at the time - he was promoted to captain of Co. H to date April 5, 1864, and honorably discharged at term's end October 13, 1864, in York.
