Carl Herman Carlson, age 87, of Somonauk, Illinois passed away Friday, September 7, 2001 at his home, as a result of complications due to smoking cigarettes for over seventy years. Herman was born on a farm near Little Rock, Illinois on May 18, 1914 the son of Carl R. and Anna (Swanson) Carlson.
    He spent four years in the U.S. Marines from 1934 to 1938. He was untied in marriage to Adalene Spach of Somonauk on July 2, 1938 in San Diego, CA. They had one daughter, Grace Anna who is married to Bill Bryson. Herman and his wife farmed north of Somonauk for many years, then went on to farm in Missouri for three years. Upon moving back to Somonauk, Sandwich area, they again farmed for many years before Herman became caretaker of the Sandwich Fair Grounds for twenty years. He was a member of the Suydam United Methodist Church.
    Survivors include his wife, Adalene of Somonauk; his daughter, Anna (Bill) Byson of Somonauk; five granddaughters, Bonnie (William) Sharp of Leland, IL, Teresa (John) Green of Somonauk, IL, Carolyn (James) Tuma of Waterman, IL, Janet (David) Farace of O'Fallon, MO, and Sharon (Sam) Negron of Somonauk, IL; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandson; two brother, Russell Carlson of Florida and Arnold (Katherine) Carlson of Plano, IL; three sisters, Ruth Carlson and Emma Carlson both of Plano, IL, and Doris (Ralph) Ginger of Sandwich, IL; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Oscar, Arthur and Clarence; and one great grandson, Christopher Sharp.
    Funeral services for Herman will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Burkhart Funeral Home, Sandwich. Rev. Gary Stickney and Rev. Robert Dell will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Mound Cemetery, Somonauk, IL. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 10, 2001 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Burkhart Funeral Home, Sandwich, IL.
