Born in Brown Co., Minnesota, he moved with his family to Valley Co., Montana, growing up near Hinsdale.

George "Mert" Baalke and Mrs. Edith Yeaton Higgs Lingle were married and raised her son Gail, who took his surname "Baalke". Florence was born in 1921.

They lived in Smith Flat, involving themselves socially in various organizations; they also lived in Santa Rosa.

Edith passed away in 1945. He remained a widower for a while, then married Jennie. They lived in Santa Cruz for a time. Jennie died in 1977 in Reno. Mert was living in Nevada, at the time of his death.
