Paulina Bell [Baalke] Stephens, 92, died Thursday, January 23, in Glasgow's Valley View Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Monday, Januarry 27, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Charies Wilson officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery with Bell Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Born March 14, 1893 inSpringfield, Minnesota, she was the daughter of Herman and Mary Baalke. She moved to Hinsdale, before she started school. Her parents only spoke German at home, when she started school she didn't speak English so her mother had to teach her the language. She has lived in Valley County since she moved here with her family in 1900. At age 19 she taught school from 1912 until 1916 at a country school in Medicine Lake, Montana. In 1916 she married James R. Stephens. He was a Valley County sheriff . He died in 1932. They lived up Buggy Creek then moved to the Fox place east of Tampico where they raised mules and horses. Her home was considered a boarding house to the many people who stayed with them through the years. She moved into Glasgow in the early 60's . She has lived at Valley View for the past eight years. She loved beautiful things such as flowers, trees, art and sculpture. She enjoyed cooking and reading the paper. She was the last surviving child of the six children in the Baalke family.
