A resident of Prussia, Germany, Herman came to America by himself, between 1871 and 1880. He eventually came to live in Brown Co., Minnesota, an area with a large presence of German and Prussian emigrants.
Here he met and married Miss Mary Dora Shultz, recorded as Sigel, Brown Co., Minnesota. The couple had six children all born in Springfield, Brown Co., Minnesota. They relocated to Valley Co., Montana, in the early 1900's.
Mary passed away in 1913. He lived in Montana until sometime in the 1920's he went to California. He lived near his son for a time, then became a resident of the Napa State Hospital.
