Kester Ulm Snyder was the son of William Kester Snyder and Della Amanda Martin. He was known by his family and friends as "Kess". During his adult years, he was known by his initials, "K. U.".

After high school, Kess attended Kansas State Agricultural College, leaving in 1914, to serve in the United States Navy, during World War I. In 1920, he worked as a farm hand alongside his brother, Lowe, in Haskell, Haskell County, Kansas. About 1930, he attended the Kansas City School of Law. After graduating he opened an office in the Home Savings building on Grand Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri and practiced both, in Kansas and Missouri. He served in the Republican Party as a Kansas Legislator in the State Senate for Johnson County, Kansas between 1949 and 1951. About 1953, Kess ran on the Republican ticket for Probate Judge in Johnson County, but all indications reveal he lost the election.

His first marriage was to Irene Johnson. Their marriage ended in divorce. Kess then married Mina Frances Snow, daughter of Leo and Martha Snow, 11 Oct 1941 at Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas. Mina died in 1997.

He was a member of the Countryside Christian Church in Mission, Kansas and a devoted 32nd degree Mason.
